Here at Belly Bandit HQ, a women-owned and operated company, we believe in celebrating the success of all women in business! Our “Moms Who Made It” series is our way of honoring Mompreneurs who inspire us every day.
This month, in honor of Breastfeeding Awareness Month, we're thrilled to be featuring, Claire Ekelund, founder of Bebe au Lait! In 2004, Claire recognized that there was a need for stylish and functional nursing covers. Her high-quality and clever designs quickly developed a loyal following and from there came blankets, bibs, nursing pillows and so much more!
Describe your business philosophy:
Make it better.
What inspired you to go into business?
There was a real need; moms didn’t have many stylish options for nursing in 2004. What started out as a personal craft project turned into a business
When did you know you, “made it?”
I’m not sure I’ll ever feel we’ve ‘made it’. There is always something to strive for. However, when I saw images of Gwen Stefani in US Weekly breastfeeding using our cover, that was a pretty special moment!
Who is your mentor?
My husband. We built our company together. Being a former pro-athlete, he has the fearless competitiveness and perseverance that is necessary for business. He always has a calming outlook on problems that might arise and he has a work ethic and drive like no other.
What’s your #1 tip for moms interested in starting their own business?
Have a great support group, whether that is your own family, your husband or a mentor. The entrepreneur life doesn’t switch off between 5 pm and 8 am and you will need that support to encourage you through ups and downs.
What does “me” time mean to you?
Reading, playing golf, dinner/movie with the family. Anything that doesn’t involve an iPhone or a computer.
What‘s on your bedside table?
I just finished reading City of Thieves, David Benioff. I usually have a business book and a ‘for fun’ book on the go at all times.
