Top FAQs

What clothes should I wear for breastfeeding?

We recommend nursing tank tops, nursing t-shirts, and a few good nursing bras. You’ll want products that are comfortable and have ease of use. Keep in mind nursing can get messy, so having multiple items is a good idea!

Is it OK to wear sports bras while nursing?

Yes! Our Nursing Sports Bra is designed with quick-dry, moisture-wicking performance fabric making it perfect for the active mom. It also features an easy one-hand clasp release with a modesty shield. The bra also offers wire-free support and has no-dig, extra-wide padded straps for a comfortable fit.

When should you start wearing nursing bras?

It’s up to you, but many women start wearing them during pregnancy as this is the time when your breasts begin to grow and change.

How do nursing tank tops work?

Nursing Tanks come in a variety of styles. The best nursing tanks are ones that have easy slide over nursing access, provide support, coverage and keep nursing pads in place.

Do you really need nursing tank tops?

A nursing tank is a great option for breastfeeding moms. Keep in mind you’ll potentially be breastfeeding for a year or more, so having a variety of clothing options is a good idea. You’ll want to find a tank that gives you support and keeps your nursing pads in place.

What should I wear to bed when breastfeeding?

A comfortable sleep bra, such as our B.D.A. Bra is a great option to wear to bed when breastfeeding. This bra is wire-free and has a wide bottom for a secure fit. It’s lightweight and features stretch and recover fabric which means you can start wearing it during pregnancy and happily ever after!

Tips for nursing a newborn

Most newborns need 8-12 feedings a day—about one feeding every two to three hours. Look for early signs of readiness to feed. Signs include moving the hands to the mouth, sucking on fists and fingers, and lip smacking. Fussing and crying are later cues. The sooner you begin each feeding, the less likely you'll need to soothe a frantic baby. When your baby stops suckling, closes his or her mouth, or turns away from the nipple or bottle, he or she might be full—or simply taking a break. Try burping your baby or waiting a minute before offering your breast again. As your baby gets older, he or she may take in more milk in less time at each feeding. If you have trouble latching, try different positions.

How long do you nurse a newborn?

During the newborn period, most breastfeeding sessions take 20 to 45 minutes. However, because newborn babies are often sleepy, this length of time may require patience and persistence. Feed on the first side until your baby stops suckling, hands are no longer fisted, and your baby appears sleepy and relaxed. When these occur, break the suction, burp the baby and go to the other side. Continue to feed your baby until he/she stops the feeding at the second breast. Alternate the side you start with for the next feeding. While most babies will feed from both breasts at each feeding, some babies will be satisfied after one breast. Watch for long, slow sucks with swallows by the baby. It is normal for babies to “cluster feed,” meaning they feed several times close together and then go several hours without feeding. During the first days of life, normal, healthy newborns may breastfeed every hour or several times in one hour, especially during the evening and nighttime hours. Your baby should be satisfied after cluster feedings.

Is there a difference between nursing and breastfeeding?

Breastfeeding, also called nursing, is the process of feeding a mother's breast milk to her infant, either directly from the breast or by expressing (pumping out) the milk from the breast and bottle-feeding it to the infant.

What is the best bra to wear when breastfeeding?

The best nursing bras feel good on and are super functional to help you nurse or pump quickly and easily. After you give birth, your full milk will come in and some people will grow another cup size or two. While that’s happening, you want a comfortable bra with no constricting seams or underwire and room to spare. When your baby is a few months old and your milk supply has stabilized, you might shop for a more structured and supportive style, whether it’s wireless or underwire. You might also want several types of nursing bras, including those best for sleep, pumping bras, a supportive nursing sports bra for working out and the best bras for breastfeeding every day.

How do I know what size nursing bra to buy?

As a good rule of thumb: Add one cup size and one back size onto your usual pre-pregnancy bra size. So if you usually wear a 32C, start by trying a 34D.

What shirts are good for nursing?

Button down tops, loose t-shirts, and deep v-neck tops can be nursing-friendly. The only nursing specific clothing you really need is a few good nursing tanks. These are great because they have snaps on the straps that are easy to undo and because these are thin, you can wear them basically under anything! Layering is key, you can wear a nursing tank under sweatshirts, tee shirts, throw a cardigan over it, and just a big poncho/wrap would work (which works well as a nursing cover as well!)

Are nursing tank tops worth it?

The short answer is yes, but you don’t need a whole wardrobe of them. Get 2-3 two that feel comfy so you’ll always have a clean one ready to go. Nursing tank tops provide easy access for feedings, provide an additional layer of support and shaping, and offer extra modesty for nursing in public. They can be worn on their own, or under a non-nursing top that’s easy to lift up or button down.
