C-Section births are increasingly common. In fact, according to Medical News Today, C-sections represent over 30% of deliveries in the United States.
The Mayo Clinic describes a Cesarean delivery (C-section) as "a surgical procedure used to deliver a baby through incisions in the abdomen and uterus." They go on to say that a C-section delivery may be safer than vaginal delivery for you and the baby if:
As an increasing number of mothers undergo C-section births, aftercare is more important than ever - especially if it is an emergency C-section.
We've put together a few post-pregnancy tips to help you get comfortable after your C-section...
1) Take it Easy
As hard as it may sound, it's essential that you take some 'mama time' to make your body feel at ease. Rest up and make sure anything you need is an easy arm's reach away. You'll also want to avoid lifting anything heavier than your baby.
2) Wear Comfy Clothing
Be careful with the Cesarean incision area. C-Section scars can be very sensitive after recent surgery. It is important to wear clothing that does not irritate this area. Belly Bandit's C-Section Recovery Briefs and our high-waisted C-section & Postpartum Recovery Undies or Postpartum Girdle) were made with comfort in mind and can be worn day and night. These soft and supportive undies help protect the C-section area while fighting off bacteria and odor with silver infused fibers. The light compression can also help reduce swelling and aid in the recovery process.
3) Healthy Eating
While this may seem obvious, it's important to make sure you are drinking plenty of water and eating fresh fruits and vegetables to get all the fiber and nutrients you need.
4) Help Heal with a Belly Wrap
Belly binding can help further along the C-section healing process. Belly wraps hold together the abdominal area while covering and protecting the sensitive incision scar. Our Belly Bandit Luxe Belly Wrap is great for full c-section scar coverage and overall comfort. We also recommend our Belly Bandit Viscose from Bamboo Belly Wrap since it is exceptionally soft and is naturally anti-microbial and moisture-wicking.
5) Avoid Strenuous Physical Activity.
You probably won't want (or feel) like hitting the gym post-surgery, but taking a gentle walk is a good idea. The movement can help with healing and may even prevent blood clots or post-surgery constipation. You'll also want to hold off on having sex or using tampons until you get your doctor's ok!
6) Put your Doc on Speed Dial
If you're experiencing excessive discomfort during your C-section recovery or simply need some physical or emotional support, be sure to speak with your Ob-Gyn. A medical professional will be able to give you recommendations about what to wear and do so as not to impair your healing process. If necessary, they can also recommend pain medication and provide emotional support suggestions
